Santhome Basilica, Chennai
Also known as Santhome Basilica, Chennai and the National Shrine of Saint Thomas, this Roman Catholic minor basilica is a significant sacred site in Chennai, located in the Santhome area. It was originally built by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century over the tomb of Saint Thomas, one of Jesus's apostles. In 1893, the British rebuilt this historic church in Chennai in the Neo-Gothic style, and the structure seen today reflects their architectural influence. Remarkably, it is one of only three churches in the world constructed over the tomb of an apostle.
